Eat Out - Yum Cha @ Crystal Jade

Day 185 - 正月初一

Wanted to go Shark Fin's House for Yum Cha today but it was fully booked and we ended up at Crystal Jade, which is fine with me as I had been wanting to try their yum cha. Supposed to meet Junlin, his wife, Jasmine, Emily, Shenton and Jiaqi for yum cha but in the end, Junlin and Jasmine were both held up at work and only 5 of us headed for yum cha.

Melbourne's Crystal Jade is NOT from the same Crystal Jade Group that we see in SG. They just share the same name. Coincidence or deliberate attempt to ride on its good reputation? The food standard is way below that of Crystal Jade Group so I'm guessing it's the latter.

We were there at 1230pm and it wasn't too crowded. We had the usual fare like, 烧卖,虾饺,肠粉,叉烧酥, 炸虾饺,春卷 and of course, 流沙包. Mr Tan wanted to have 皮蛋瘦肉粥 but they are only serving 發財粥. Needless to say, we ordered it, hoping to 發大財啊!Food was alright, but the 叉烧酥 was too dry. I didn't like it though Jiaqi likes it. I did like the 流沙包 as the salted egg yolk taste was strong and yummy. I prefer this to Shark Fin's rendition. We weren't really full at the end of the meal but the carts were rather infrequent and after a while, everyone just stopped eating. I don't mind going back again for yum cha but Jasmine (who has been there previously) doesn't like it. I guess we are sticking to Shark's Fin House for future yum cha sessions in Chinatown. Shark's Fin House is not fantastic, if you compare it to SG or HK standards but it is probably one of the better ones in the city. I heard that there are a couple of nice yum cha places but they are so far away, only possible when we go for road trips. Until we get a car, beggars are not choosers.
