Disappointing result..

Day 391

Decided to go to bed last night after I saw the disappointing update on TTR to say that Dr Thunder has won by 8000 votes. The numbers came in today. Dr TCB lost by 7269 votes. Less than 1%. But it doesn't matter. He lost. Sigh.

I used to think that my homeland is the best place to live in. Safe, beautiful, clean and efficient. I was always proud to tell others I'm a Singaporean. But as I began to travel beyond our neighbouring countries, I realised that despite the fact that we are better than some, we lag behind so many others. I also came to realise why many would think that Singapore is part of China...

I love my country, very much in fact and I am proud of how efficient we are when it comes to certain things but there are just too many other things that we can do to make it a better place. The last time I returned, Singaporeans seemed to have become the minority. Everywhere we went, it was filled with those so-called "FT". I have nothing against them, until they mocked at us publicly, until they tried to stop us from cooking our favourite curry, until they hung their national flag outside their flat.

Change might not happen during my lifetime but I really hope it'll come soon.

Soupy Saturday

Day 390

Yes, we're both sick. Mr Tan is down with a cold, has been coughing non-stop for the past few days and his blocked nose only made things worse. I'm not really sick though, it's just the time of the month for me. The one day every month that I just want to hole up at home with my hot water bottle. Although he's down with cold, he's still very excited because today is the "Bachelor Day & Night" for Junlin - one of his colleagues. They aren't exactly close friends but I guess when you are away from home, every friend counts. As we all know, BDN is something guys will NOT miss at ANY cost. Nothing is going to stop him and he left immediately after lunch. Didn't even bother to help bring the groceries home even though the casino (the venue for the BDN) is right next to our place! What can I say? The power of BDN...

By the way, today is the voting day for our Presidential Election and although the guys have been following the news about the election and articulated their strong views about how important it is for people to vote for the correct "Tan", blah blah blah blah blah...they aren't going to vote. At the end of the day, BDN rules above everything else!

Gin's Kitchen - Creamy Garlic Prawns

Day 388

Another recipe on prawns - one of my fave seafood. This is the first time I'm using cooking cream and I'm rather pleased with the results though I'm not sure if I'll be using it again. It's more for angmoh food rather than cheenah food. The prawns tasted pretty good even without adding the cream so I might skip the cream the next time I cook it.

Ingredients
- 12 green prawn cutlets
- 30g of butter
- 4 tablespoons of cooking cream
- 2 tablespoons of dry white wine
- 1 clove of garlic
- parsley for garnishing

Directions
1. Melt butter in pan over medium-high heat
2. Once butter has melted, add prawns and cook until they are almost cooked
3. Reduce heat and add garlic into pan and stir for about 30 seconds (be careful not to burn the garlic!)
4. Add dry white wine and bring it to boil
5. Add cooking cream and stir well
6. Simmer sauce until it has thickened to desired consistency
7. Turn off heat, add parsley and serve with rice *Yum~~~~~~*

Sydney Made Me Fat!

Day 379 - 385
16 - 22 August 2011
 Food, Food and more Food!

Culprit #1 - 85C
A familiar cafe that Zhi, MP and I frequented while we were in Beijing. I had a cup of Pearl Milk Tea every day during our Beijing trip. I was jumping for joy when I saw it in Sydney. Delicious cheese bites that I can easily pop 5 in one go and pearl milk tea that taste like the real thing! The cheese bites are DELISH! Yum, yum, yum!

Culprit #2 - Singapore Shiok!
Delicious Char Kway Teow, Chicken Rice, Prawn Mee and Laksa from Singapore Shiok! 有猪油的炒粿条,嫩嫩的白斩鸡,虾味十足的虾面汤,用粗米粉的Laksa。。。超有家的味道!我喜欢!

Culprit #3 - Fresh and Cheap Salmon Sashimi @ Sydney Fish Market
If only there's such a market in Melbourne, I'll be having sashimi every week! Ever since Mr Tan got me started on sashimi, I'm so sooooo hooked! Just can't have enough of them...

Culprit #4 - 我最爱的鼎泰豐!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Enough said.

Sydney is a food paradise! It IS my fave place in Australia! I had such a great time in Sydney that we extended our stay there and I can't wait to go back again. Although many around me prefer Melbourne to Sydney, I have to say, I prefer Sydney!! What's there not to love about Sydney? I mean, Sydney is more colourful, more vibrant and has much more to offer than Melbourne. IMHO, I find the people in Sydney to be better dressed, better groomed and better looking. (lots of cute Japanese and Taiwanese girls) :)

Spring is here!

Day 379

Spring is here and I'm going to Sydney to celebrate! Haha. Nah, if only I have that much cash to burn. Mr Tan is going to Sydney for work, needless to say, I'm tagging along! Not because of I can't bear to part with him, but because I've WANT to go Sydney! I've been wanting to visit Sydney ever since we came here. Unfortunately, his client is located in the suburbs and we only have 1 1/2 days in the city. Still, I'm really excited! Sydney, here I come~!

Farewell, Lele.....

Day 377
14 August 2011

Woke up to sad news this morning...Bro msged me to say that Lele has passed away... :(

Lele was Bro's pet hamster, a gift from his ex. Initially, Papa and Mama Goh were apprehensive about having a pet at home but they soon gave in after seeing how adorable Lele was. When Bro was away in the hostel, they would feed Lele everyday and remind Umi to wash its cage often. Papa and Mama Goh would feed Lele with its favourite sunflower seeds despite Bro's protest. Bro wanted Lele to have a balanced diet but Papa and Mama Goh would say that Lele refuse to eat anything except sunflower seeds. At one point, Lele was so fat and fluffy. Absolutely adorable. Ting Ting loves Lele too. She would go to its cage every time she comes to our place and calls out Lele's name repeatedly. She don't dare to touch Lele but she would sit beside Lele's cage and look at Lele.

As the days went by, Lele became old and weak. When I went back this time, it broke my heart to see Lele. Everyone knew Lele was reaching the end of its life and it was heartbreaking. Lele passed away last night but Bro was not there to see it for the last time. Papa and Mama Goh didn't call Bro when they found Lele lying motionless in its cage. Papa Goh and Umi did some rituals for Lele and discarded it into the rubbish chute!! Needless to say, Bro was devastated. Sigh. The last thing we can do is to give it a proper burial, definitely not into the rubbish chute. What's done cannot be undone. Rest in peace, Lele...

Bro's msg for Lele...
"Thank you for the wonderful 3 years, Lele. You had outlived your species and I am proud of you. But why did you leave me w/o saying goodbye? Bwah. I hope you had fun in the Goh's family. You will be missed by everybody. RIP."

Death is always painful for the living....

Sushi Day!

Day 376

I can't seem to have enough of Japanese food after my trip to Fukuoka!

Lunch @ Sushi Chef
吃不饱饿不死的午餐。。太爱睡觉的后果。。

Dinner @ Yoyogi Japanese Cafe
Servers are all Chinese. Terrible or rather no service to speak of except for 1 female server. Mr Tan wanted a refill for his green tea and tried to catch their attention several times but it seemed like he had Harry Potter's Cloak of Invisibility on and nobody could see him! I raised my hand and one of the servers saw my raised hand and even made eye contact with me but chose to ignore me too! *super pissed* When a male server came to clean up the table next to ours, Mr Tan quickly told him about the tea refill and guess what? He said ok and then did NOTHING about it. He went about his other chores and simply IGNORED us. WTF?!?! Seriously, if you are so unwilling to serve diners, don't be a server. You are paid to serve. If you are only willing to serve angmohs, put up a sign at the entrance of your restaurant to say so. We would gladly go somewhere else.

We finally managed to catch the attention of the only female server who was doing her job. She came back immediately with our tea refill. And she did this with a SMILE. The only time we appeared visible to the servers was when we were paying for the meal. The server who made eye contact with me but ignored me totally was soooooooo eager to collect money from us that even before we could reach the counter, she had already keyed in our bill. We can accept bad food but bad service is a big NO-NO. The food sucks anyway. The salmon sashimi wasn't fresh and the udon soup was so bland that I had to add soy sauce. The tempura batter was thick and the prawn was totally tasteless. Screw Yoyogi. We're never going back.

Surprise, Surprise

Day 375
12th August 2011

Flight was delayed for half an hour last night but thankfully it wasn't a full flight and I have 3 seats all to myself! *super happy* zzZZzzzzz...Immigration was a breeze this morning and I was out within 20 minutes. As I was making my way to the taxi stand, someone stopped me. Wasn't expecting him to pick me up but he did! Nice surprise from Mr Tan. :) Thank you, Mr Tan.

Another surprise was waiting for me at home. His mess. Luckily he did the laundry and dishes. Plus he picked me up from the airport so I shall only nag at him for a week. Now I know why wives never go on holiday without the husbands. After the holiday, wives have to spend another week to clean up the mess at home. Men. Period.

不想说再见。。。

Day 374
11 August 2011

Zhi's first day of work at DQ. Was supposed to go back to DQ in the morning to see her and catch up with Rosiah and the rest but I forgot to set the alarm and only managed to reach school around 10am. Thankfully Zhi didn't have lessons at 10 and can hang out with me. It feels great to be back in school, especially when Zhi is there. Feels like old times. Went to Rosiah's class with Zhi and we managed to have some time together, thanks to Zhi. Even got a hug and sayang from Rosiah before I leave. :) Said goodbye to Zhi and told her to wait for me. I hope to be back soon. I hate to say goodbye.

Went shopping with Mama Goh and realised how old she is. Her knees have been giving her problems these last few years and she has to give up her favourite heels. Nowadays, she walks around in flats and even so, she experiences pain whenever she walks too much. Age is definitely catching up and it pains me to see her like this. Hopefully she'll retire at the end of this year and get some well deserved rest before deciding on what to do next.

After shopping, we picked Papa Goh and Guma from the shop and went home together. Guma and Xiaogu bought me so much stuff that I could hardly fit them into my luggage. While packing, Papa and Mama Goh gave me money again. I refused to take it but they just left it there. I'm not working over here and they worry constantly about me not having enough money to spend even though I tell them that Mr Tan gives me more than enough money to spend. Bro went to the airport straight after work and waited for a couple of hours there for us. Mei came to our place straight after work. Ah Jie called me numerous times to apologise for not being able to see me off as Ting Ting is ill. 我真的很幸福。。

Thanks to Guma, Xiaogu, Papa and Mama Goh's gifts of love, my luggage weighed a whopping 31kg! I could barely lift it up. Had dinner at the airport but there was no Kopitiam for me to have my Bar Chor Mee. Blame it on my poor time management. If we reached the airport earlier, we would be able to take the Skytrain to T3 for my Bar Chor Mee. It was almost time to say goodbye after dinner and I tried hard to fight back my tears. I hugged all of them before going in and tears were already rolling down my cheeks before I went in. I'm not the only one who teared. I love to go back to visit everyone but I hate saying goodbye.

Thank you Zhi, Rosiah, Meiping, Kellyn, Vivi, Michelle, Ting Li, Ray, Miyo, Maggie, Leng and Fen for spending time with me..
Thank you Zhi for the wonderful time in Fukuoka..
Thank you Mei, Xiaogu, Guma, Ah Jie, Jiefu and Ting Ting for your love and support all these years..
Thank you Papa Goh, Mama Goh and Bro for always being here for me..
谢谢你们的爱。。因为有你们,我是幸福的。。
