Day 250
I've been craving for Char Kway Teow for a long time and searched many forums to find the nicest one in town. In the end, it was down to quite a few but because Mr Tan's working late, decided to go to the nearest one, Chillipadi Mamak Kopitiam (CMK), which is still a 15 mins drive away from our place. There were so many rave reviews about this place and I was praying really hard to score some delicious char kway teow last night. But I was sorely disappointed.
There were a small number of tables empty and we saw lots of angmoh in the front of the restaurant and usually, that's not a good sign for Asian restaurants. I ordered the Char Kway Teow (prawns and pipis) and Teh C Peng while Mr Tan ordered "Or Chien", Chicken Curry Laksa and Ribena with Lychee.
The Char Kway Teow was way too salty and the pipis were extremely salty, probably soaked in salt water for too long. There isn't much chilli in it and although they were pretty generous with the ingredients, I would prefer my Char Kway Teow to have more sweet dark soy sauce. Other than saltiness, I couldn't taste anything else.
In every curry laksa, the soup is the most important and the one we had tonight was too watery and it was probably one of the lousier ones we have had so far. His "Oh Chien" was the most disappointing dish of the night. There was simply too much starch and the whole dish was like a ball of starch. In the end, he was merely picking the oysters out to eat.
My Teh C Peng was too sweet but the Ribena with Lychee was a brillant innovation. I really enjoyed that drink. Will definitely try making that at home.
Char Kway Teow carving NOT satisfied!!!
Once again, the only-know-how-to-talk Mr Tan said, "Just cook it at home, how difficult can it be to fry some kway teow?"
To which I replied, "If it is so easy, why is it that so many chefs can never get it right? So when do you intend to cook it for me?"
Mr Tan, "................"
NATO!
