Eat Out - Passion Flower (Ice Cream)

Day 75

After our Peking Duck feast, we headed back to city for Jasmine and Allison's favourite ice cream - Passion Flower. It sells a variety of ice cream flavours such as Pandan, Black Sesame, Lychee Rose, Red Bean, Green Tea, Taro etc. It is almost always packed with Asians. They have a minimum spending of $10 per person for dine-in guests on Friday and Saturday nights, yet it is still packed. Today we were lucky to get a table for the 6 of us and sample their desserts!

Black Pearl
Black Sesame Ice cream with glutinuous rice balls

Double Happiness
Green Tea + Red Bean Ice cream with glutinous rice balls and topped with red beans

Superstar
Black Sesame + Red Bean + Taro Ice cream with glutinous rice balls

Eastern Sunrise
Taro + Sticky Rice + Green Tea Ice cream with banana, lychees and oranges

Western Sunset
Chocolate + Vanilla + Strawberry Ice cream with banana, strawberry and hot fudge chocolate cream

Banana Waffles - Self explanatory..haha..

Verdict: It is a nice dessert place to chill with your friends but I didn't really fall in love with any of the flavours although the girls love the Black Sesame, Green Tea and Taro to bits. Each of the above cost $15 so it is not cheap. Once in a blue moon indulgence for me.

Eat Out - Old Kingdom (Crispy Duck)

Day 75

It's Saturday again! After last night's super cold weather, I was really happy to see the sun this morning when I woke up! It's market time! But the sun was deceiving. The wind was strong and the worst thing was, it suddenly started to rain when we reached at the tram stop. There's no shelter at the tram stop so we were at the mercy of the rain. Luckily the tram came and we were spared the agony of standing in the rain.

After marketing, we went Dessert House for lunch. I had baked rice and Mr Tan had his fave 虾酱鸡饭。 We went home to settle our groceries before going to meet Jasmine, Allison, Jiaqi and Shenton for dinner at Old Kingdom.

Old Kingdom is famous for their Peking Duck. It is best to call and reserve a table and they have 2 seatings. One at 6pm and the other at 8pm. Here, they serve it as a three-course duck meal. They don't cut the skin until it is paper thin like what we have back home. Instead, they cut the skin and meat off together.

First Course - Skin & Meat wrapped in Pancake with Cucumber and Spring onion

Second Course - Stir-fry Duck Meat with Noodles, Bean Sprouts and Spring Onion (we added $10 for the noodles)

Third Course -  咸菜鸭汤

Each duck cost $55 and we ordered 2 ducks to share among 6 of us. The total bill was $129, including the tea and extra charge for noodles.

Verdict: The skin was crispy and the duck meat was quite tender. The pancake was paper thin. Not oily,没有太多面粉而且吃多不会腻。I like it! :) But the noodles and soup was average, nothing to wow about. I would definitely come here with Mr Tan the next time he has a craving for crispy duck!

Freezing...

Day 75

I'm freezing......please let tomorrow be a warmer day....It's supposed to be SPRING, not WINTER!

Eat Out - Old Town Kopitiam - Mamak (Malaysian and Singaporean Hawker Fare)

Day 74 - THE COLDEST DAY

Today's weather is FREAKING COLD. It is the coldest that we have experienced in our 2 months here. It has fallen below 10 degrees. It was in fact 9.4 degrees but it felt like 5 degrees with the strong wind! Because of the rain, I couldn't go to the market today.

The howling wind was strong and merciless. It caused me to sway when I was at the traffic light and when I was crossing the road, I couldn't walk in a straight line. It blew me towards a car that had stopped at the traffic light! I was supposed to meet Mr Tan and Jasmine for dinner and drinks and it was too cold. I was waiting for the tram and I was shivering. I called Mr Tan and told him I can't take it anymore. I'm heading back home, please buy dinner back. I might be blown away any time before the tram arrives!

My hero braved the winds to bring dinner back for me! :)

Me - Jasmine Rice + Fried Chicken + Sambal Prawns + Sambal Fried Eggs ($11)
Hero - Briyani Rice + Curry Chicken + Fried Chicken + Sambal Prawns ($12)

Verdict - Food was alright but portions were quite miserable, especially for the curry chicken, only 1 piece of medium-sized chicken. But the sambal was good. It was spicy! The fried chicken (thigh meat) was a little too dry but the seasoning was tasty and it came with a piece of papadam! Hero said that the next time he orders it, he will just buy 3 portions of fried chicken since they are all of the same price. Hopefully we can visit the other branch next Friday!

Fried Chicken with Papadam
Briyani Rice + Sambal Prawns + Curry Chicken (where is the chicken???)

Gin's Kitchen - Spinach with 3 Eggs (上汤菠菜)

Day 73

I was looking at the numerous food photos that my brother and mei posted after family dinners..laksa prawns, 鱼翅, 炸苏东仔,上汤菠菜,I was drooling...so, today I tried to make 上汤菠菜, one of my fave vegetable dish. :)

I searched the net for recipes and couldn't find many. I only managed to find 2 that includes all the 3 eggs, 鸡蛋,皮蛋,咸蛋。Mr Tan and I love 咸蛋 and 皮蛋 is one of his 最爱。So this dish is really perfect for us.

I followed the recipe to closely as I did not want to destroy my precious 咸蛋. Apparently the sequence of adding in the eggs is important in order to achieve the same texture as those we eat in the restaurant, 咸蛋, followed by 皮蛋 and lastly 鸡蛋. We brought the 咸蛋 all the way from home! haha..

It was pretty easy to cook and although the dish did not turn out as nice as those in the restaurant, it was not too bad and I was happy with the outcome. Only thing, I added too much 鸡蛋 and did not stir it in properly so the 鸡蛋 were kinda everywhere. But it was an easy dish and I simply love drinking the soup....

As you can see, the 鸡蛋 is everywhere
